Series 1, Episode 2

Cast- Clive Anderson, Archie Hahn, Rory Bremner (first appearance), Jimmy Mulville (first appearance), John Sessions and Richard Vranch on piano.

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- t's a day at the seaside for Archie as Truman Capote, Rory as Clive James, Jimmy as Dylan Thomas, and John as James Joyce.
Film and Theatre Styles- Archie sacks Jimmy, in the styles Godfather, Australian soap and horror. Then used car salesman Rory has John as a customer with the styles amateur dramatics, Brazilian soap opera and Noel Coward.
Worlds Worst- Archie, Rory, Jimmy and John perform the worst person to comfort someone on their death bed.
Props- It's Jimmy and Rory v John and Archie.
Sound Effects- Jimmy gardens as Archie provides noises.
Couples- Rory and John are at a laundrette as the couples David Attenborough and Richard Attenborough, Charles and Di, Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones, Ron and Nancy, and Torville and Dean.
Credits Reading- Rory as Barry Norman

Game Won By- Rory

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Clive messes up his intro at the start, and covers it up well. A very funny intro, his intros for Archie and John being very funny. Rory cracks up at Archies intro.
Memorable Quote- Archie is very big on the West Coast, so that should please our Cornish viewers

Authors- Not a bad playing of the game here, I thought all four were very good, especially Rory and John, and Archies accent is funny. Jimmy cracks me up in this game, he forgets his author then gets mezmorised in Rorys Clive James and forgets hes supposed to be doing his Author.

Film and Theatre Styles: Archie and Jimmy- Clive messes up again before the game starts. The Godfather part is the highlight here, Archie is excellent in this round. Not too bad

Film and Theatre Styles: Rory and John- I missed a funny suggestion from the audience just as Clive was finishing getting suggestions. If anyone knows what that was then let me know. John has a good game here, he puts across these styles very well, but Rory looked out of place.
Memorable Quote #1- Clive to the man who suggested Brazilian Soap Opera- Are you on any paticulair medication
Memorable Quote #2- John as Noel Cowell: Im a 1920s whoopsie, and I can do what I want

Worlds Worst- Im missing this game from my DVD, so Id appreciate some feedback from anyone whos seen it.

Props- Not bad, but not good either. Jimmy has some funny ideas in this one, and for some reason I find his send ideas in on a postcard line really funny.

Sound Effects- Not bad either, although too short to be that good. I like the lawnmower breaking down at the end.
Memorable Quote- Clive to the man who suggested having a bath: We want an everyday activity, not the once a month ones

Couples- Best game of the show, Rory and John complement each other so well. Rory thrives when doing impressions of course, but John does a solid job too. I enjoy David Attenbrough, Prince Charles and Smith and Jones best.

Credits Reading- An accurate Barry Norman impression, but not especially funny

Best Game- Couples
Worst Game- Worlds Worst since I didnt see it

Performer Ratings
1- Rory- Kept this show alive with his impressions
2- Jimmy- Good in parts which is surprising
3- Archie- Not much better than John
4- John- So dull that I almost fell asleep

Misc Notes- Why didnt Rory appear on the show more often, he deserved more chances than he got.

Overall- Not too bad is the running theme, its solid but not overly memorable, but still one of the better shows of the series. Thumbs slightly up.

For World's Worst episode 2, it was about "Worst person to comfort someone on their deathbed"

Some suggestions that I remember were
-Archie playing a game show host saying something like, "Even though you're dying you've just won a million dollar", or something like that.
-Archie saying, "I've always hated you, you son of a bitch!"
-Jimmy saying, "Fuck, you look terrible."
-John singing annoying songs.

I don't remember much of the other jokes.

Sounds like I didn't miss much then, so it can stay in the Worst Game position.

Series 1, Episode 3

Cast- Clive Anderson, Stephen Fry (first appearance), Peter Cook (only appearance), Josie Lawrence and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's a day at the races for Stephen as John Le Carre, Peter as Albert Goldman, Josie as womens magazines, and John as Ernest Hemingway.
Film and Theatre Styles- Political candidate Stephen seeks Peter's vote in the styles Shakespeare, farce, travelogue and gangster movie. Then Josie and John are breaking up in the styles Shakespeare, British war movie and blue movie.
Props- It's John and Peter v Josie and Stephen.
Panel- The subject is smoking for Stephen, Peter, Josie and John interviewed by Clive.
Rap- John, Josie, Peter and Stephen sing about having a baby.
Credits Reading- Peter as a New York taxi driver.

Game Won By- Peter

Game Thoughts
Introduction- A solid intro, I like what he says about Stephen and Josie

Authors- Solid enough playing, Peter is great here.

Film and Theatre Styles: Stephen and Peter- As good a playing of the game as your going to get. Peter starts the game in a style, the only performer ever to do so. Stephen pulls his trousers down. Theres mentions of orange beavers. What else do you need?
Memorable Quote- Clive to the person who suggested Chekoff: Sorry, I thought you were being rude to me

Film and Theatre Styles: Josie and John- Its obviously not going to match the Peter and Stephen game, but its still pretty good. I think Johns great in british war movie style
Memorable Quote #1- John in British War Movie on the phone: No I cant give you a cigarette over the phone
Memorable Quote #2- Clive and Josie: Clive: You must have seen a few blue movies, youve been in some as well havent you Josie: Shut up, my mum and dad are here Clive; So theyve been in them as well

Props- Clive almost forgets Stephens name, then covers it up by saying he was going to improvise him a new name. A few good ideas from Stephen, but it wasnt all that good besides that.

Panel- The only playing of the game, and I thought it was excellent. John and Josie are funny, but this games about Peter and Stephen who excel in this. Stephens monologue is the best bit. This just beats Film and Theatre Styles for best game on the show.
Memorable Quote- Clive on his name: My names Clive, but thats my problem

Rap- Watch Peters reaction to spelling mistakes being suggested for the Rap. Stephen hates the idea of having to do a rap, yet he does the best one of the four by doing a monologue instead. Peters rap cracks me up every time. Another great round.
Memorable Quote- Clive to a canniball man in the crowd who suggests baby for the rap: Have you recently had a baby yourself? It was delicious. Yes, very witty.

Credits Reading- One of the better credit reading of the series

Best Game- Panel
Worst Game- Props

Performer Ratings
1- Peter
2- Stephen
3- Josie
4- John

Overall- Man, this is excellent stuff, just great game after great game. Peter Cook and Stephen Fry added so much to this episode, and as a result its one of the must see episodes of the series. Big thumbs up.

So do you think it was a particularly memorable round or was it just the usual World's Worst stuff. If it's a good round and you have a clip could you maybe do a quick upload to Youtube or MegaUpload so I can see it. I'll then add my thoughts on it to the review.

Series 1, Episode 4

Cast- Clive Anderson, Tony Slattery (first appearance), Betty Thomas (only appearance), Paul Merton and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's Jack and the Beanstalk for Tony as William Burroughs, Betty as Mickey Spillane, Paul as Barbara Cartland, and John as Anthony Burgess.
Film and Theatre Styles- Home owner Paul is complaining to builder Tony in the styles Greek tragedy, Hollywood epic, musical and soap opera. Then Betty and John argue about a map in the styles Ealing comedy, mime, method acting and Bogart.
Props- It's Betty and Paul v John and Tony.
Every Other Line- John reads from The Poison Party while Paul gets instructions on a mission.
Film Dub- Betty and Tony argue about what to watch on television.
Party Quirks- Paul hosts while Tony has no backbone, Betty is an investigative reporter and John is an intrepid explorer.
Credits Reading- John as Anthony Hopkins.

Game Won By- John

Game Thoughts
Introduction- An OK intro, the intro for Paul was my favourite, but the others werent up to much
Memorable Quote- Theres been an enormous public response since we last had Paul on the program, but despite that weve decided to have him back anyway

Authors- Is this the only time Tony chose a serious author? Tony did a good job of it, and Betty seemed to enjoy it. Pauls is a funny one, doing someone he usually makes fun of. John does an accurate Anthony Burgess and Betty was the only bad one. A good playing

Film and Theatre Styles: Paul and Tony- Paul and Tony work really well together, and you knew how good this was going to be. A good playing, although they have far better playings in future seasons.

Film and Theatre Styles: Betty and John- John held this game together due to Bettys lack of comedy talent. Better than I was expecting.

Props- Tony and John have the best ideas here. Betty tries but just holds Paul back in this round. Not bad though. The cameraman destroys something offstage at the end of the game, and Clive deducts points from him as a result.

Every Other Line- Id say this was the weakest playing of this game, its obviously not a good book for this round. Paul does a good job though

Film Dub- I didnt see this as its missing from my DVD, but Ive heard that it was a good one. Again if anyone can fill me in on it Id appreciate it.

Party Quirks- Paul is again a good host. Tonys quirk is genius, especially when the metal pole is removed from his back. Betty is passable with her quirk, and Johns is quite witty. Tonys quirk and Pauls hosting make this round
Memorable Quote- Paul after he finds out Tonysquirk was he had no backbone: Oh what a fool Ive been. Thats why he had the pole sticking out of his back

Credits Reading- An accurate impression and I quite enjoyed it too since Johns really good when it comes to this.

Best Game- Party Quirks
Worst Game- Every Other Line

Performer Ratings
1- Paul
2- Tony
3- John
4- Betty

Misc Notes- I think Paul and Tony may be the most underrated team on Whose Line. They always work well together when given the chance, and here they show their potential for future seasons.

Overall- A few good quirks, and Tonys debut are big plus points, but most of the show was just about average and nothing more. Its has its moments, but nothing that you need to view time and time again. Thumbs in the middle.

The usual stuff. I'm certain it's already up on MU though. Somewhere in the DD forum. I think there's a "season one cut games" zip.

I had been using Betise's Youtube links in my old reviews, but the Film Dub and World's Worst playing were both missing.

I downloaded the missing games file, and it only had the World's Worst, not the Film Dub. Maybe I should download Episode 4 since it must mean that version has the game cut from my version (I must have an older version downloaded off of here a while ago).

Series 1, Episode 5

Cast- Clive Anderson, Josie Lawrence, Jonathan Pryce (first appearance), Paul Merton and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's a day in the life of a horny llama for Josie as Agatha Christie, Jonathan as the King James Bible, Paul as a do-it-yourself handbook, and John as Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Film and Theatre Styles- Paul and Josie are Jack and Jill in the styles spaghetti western, pantomime, German art film and Bond film. Then Jonathan and John report a crime in the styles Samuel Beckett, pirate film and comedia del arte
Worlds Worst- Josie, Jonathan, Paul and John do the worst Romeo and Juliet auditions.
Song Styles- The subject is television with Josie doing heavy metal and John doing folk.
Film Dub- Paul books a holiday from Jonathan.
Party Quirks- Paul hosts with Josie as a superhero, Jonathan as an exorcist, and John is under water.
Credits Reading- Josie as an angry viewer.

Game Won By- Josie

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Not an especially memorable intro
Memorable Quote- Clive: Once again we bring the wittiest, the cleverest and most exciting talent available today. But thats enough about me.

Authors- Perhaps the greatest name for a book ever. Barring Clives little mess-up, Pauls DIY was the best part of a very dull playing of the game. Jonathan wasnt bad either, but not especially funny.
Memorable Quote: Clive on King James Yes, very famous for writing the bible. Very appropiate for a Sunday. Although the programs on Friday.

Film and Theatre Styles: Paul and Josie- A funny playing of the game here, with Paul very funny again. Ive seen better though.
Memorable Quote- Josie and Paul as Jack and Jill: Josie Now were married with 42 children, and all because I took you home to bed and put vinegar and brown paper on your forehead Paul: Yes, not much of a contraceptive was it.

Film and Theatre Styles: Jonathan and John- Not a good playing, its good acting but not funny, which is what the program is supposed to be. The best bit was Jonathans pirate impression, and even it wasnt very memorable.

Worlds Worst- Just the usual dull Worlds Worst playing. One or two decent ideas from the four, with Pauls opening suggestion and Johns ending suggestion being the best.

Song Styles: Josie- Fantastic song from Josie, she gets into the style so well. Easily her best moment of the show, and the best moment of the show.

Song Styles: John- Not bad, but not good either. A few funny lines and a accurate reconstruction of the style are hurt with their being no music.

Film Dub- Clive seemed to enjoy this a lot. I thought it wasnt too bad, but there have been so many better ones than this. Still, one of the better games on the show, and Paul is again funny.

Party Quirks- Josie is solid enough as a superhero, Jonathan is pretty good as a excorcist, and John messes up his quirk by telling Paul what it is. An average playing, with a couple of good moments.

Credits Reading- Like a lot of the credits readings in this series, Josies quirk is accurate but not very funny.

Best Game- Song Styles
Worst Game- Authors

Performer Ratings
1- Paul
2- Josie
3- Jonathan
4- John

Overall- Dull episode outside of a couple of funny moments. Its a shame because Paul seemed to be in good form, if someone like Tony had been on the show then it could have been a classic. Thumbs down.

Series 1, Episode 6

Cast- Clive Anderson, Graeme Garden (only appearance), Jan Ravens (first appearance), George McGrath (first appearance) and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's Sleeping Beauty for Graeme as JB Priestley, Jan as Pam Ayres, George as Roget, and John as DH Lawrence.
Story- George tells the story A Day In The Life Of A Rubber Duck with the moral a rolling stone gathers no moss with Jan as a little girl, Graeme as her grandfather and John as Keith Richards.
Props- It's John and Jan v George and Graeme.
Party Quirks- Graeme hosts with George as an alien, Jan thinks it's her house, and John is a leprechaun.
Every Other Line- John reads from Hay Fever as Graeme is a pilot in trouble wanting to be talked down.
Film Dub- Jan and George after a heavy night.
Musical- The subjects for Graeme, John, Jan and George are puberty, coming to see a television show and making a cup of tea.
Credits Reading- Jan as Paula Yates.

Game Won By- Jan

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Another not so memorable introduction

Authors- Very dull round, only John was able to get a good amount of laughs with his rendition of DH Lawrence.

Story- Poor Abby ended up being the first person Clive went to in the audience rather than the transvestite. Great game, George helped keep this game rolling and Graeme is funny as the old man. Good stuff.
Memorable Quote- Clive to Abby in the crowd: “What strange names we’ve got in the audience this week. You’re the first person I’ve asked obviously”

Props- Clive get’s one of the Props stuck under his chair. That was the highlight of one of the worst playing of Props ever. Only George had any worthwhile ideas with three good one’s. One to skip.

Party Quirks- George’s quirk is alright, and Jan plays her quirk quite well.John’s had potential to be really funny, but he didn’t make it very funny. Graeme is a great host.
Memorable Quote- George after Clive rings the doorbell instead of using the buzzer: “Oh, it’s the invisible man”

Every Other Line- A good game, George livened things up and John picked some good lines to use.

Film Dub- A solid enough Film Dub, although one of my less favourite playings.

Musical- The poor audience member who Clive went to got embarrased since he had no idea what to say. A good game, which was lots of fun, I especially enjoyed George in this round.

Credits Reading- I liked this Credits Reading, Jan is an impressionist so was able to do an accurate and reasonably funny impression here.

Best Game- Musical
Worst Game- Props

Performer Ratings
1- Graeme
2- George
3- John
4- Jan

Misc Notes- While I didn’t think Graeme was good the first time I saw this episode, after seeing it a few more times it’s clear he was the best performer on this episode. A great performance by the veteran.

Overall- It’s not an episode to remember. Only two games are especially good, Musical and Story. The rest aren’t worth watching. Thumbs down.

Magnus, I'll sticky this and promote this thread as you do reviews, but correct me if I'm [probably] wrong, but weren't their two very thorough sites that had WL reviews?

Thanks, I appreciate that you plan to sticky this in the future.

Yes, there is one site with thorough Whose Line reviews, Whose Line Wiki (I'm using their game descriptions with full credit given), but the site has a lot of broken links now and isn't very easy to navigate because of this. Plus I thought it would be nice to give a second opinion on the show.
Anyway, that's why I thought I'd do some reviews of my own Smile

Film Dub- Rory complains to hotel manager Jonathan.
Remote Control- Tony does Star Trek, Jonathan does Call My Bluff, Rory does breakfast TV and John does Bilko, all on the subject of pornography.
Credits Reading- Rory as his mother.

Game Won By- Rory

Game Thoughts
Introduction- A funny intro, including Clive again messing it up at the start. I like his comments on Tony and John best.
Memorable Quote- Clive on John: “And introducing the incomparible John Sessions who let’s face it has more talent in his little finger than the rest of his body put together”

Authors- Some funny banter between Rory and Clive at the start about his author and Jeffrey Archer. Clive’s comment about the person in the crowd is funny too. The round itself wasn’t an especially memorable one, but had it’s moments.

Film and Theatre Styles: Tony and Jonathan- Tony is fantastic in this round, I love his amatuer dramatics especially. Jonathan tried but didn’t draw many laughs, Tony helped him out here. Solid enough overall.

Film and Theatre Styles: John and Rory- Rory is great in this round, one of the only people to make John Sessions play second to him for much of the game. Great stuff, Rory and John are a funny team and work well together.

World’s Worst- Tony has a lot of great suggestions in a reasonaly good playing of World’s Worst. A few good suggestions by Rory as well.
Memorable Quote; Tony: “Hello, you must be….ugh nobody told me you had a face like a dog’s bum”

Props- Not an especially good playing of Props, Jonathan is surprisingly best in this round with a lot of good suggestions. But another Props game to avoid.

Advetisment: Tony- Clive has some banter with someone in the crowd before it starts. Who would have thought Tony would do a round like this, right (I’m being sarcastic of course). Short and to the point, a solid advert from Tony.

Advertisment: John- Clive makes his first bald joke about himself with the reference to the toupee suggested by the crowd. Not bad either, although not especially funny either.

Film Dub- I enjoyed this Film Dub, Rory is great here, and Jonathan contributes reasonably well too. Solid.

Remote Control- Best game of the show here. Rory is my favourite, he’s very good at doing Breakfest TV, maybe he should have been on it. The other three were all good too, Tony’s Star Trek made me laugh.

Credits Reading- Another not so memorable Credits Reading. Then again, how do we know if Rory was spot on or not?

Best Game- Remote Control
Worst Game- Props

Performer Ratings
1- Rory
2- Tony
3- John
4- Jonathan

Misc Notes- I wonder why Rory didn’t appear more than a few times, he was really good here, and showed all the potential to be a regular.

Overall- Solid enough episode, with Rory having a very good debut, and some good games. Thumbs slightly up.

Series 1, Episode 8

Cast- Clive Anderson, Richard Kaplin (only appearance), Griff-Rhys Jones (first appearance), Paul Merton and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's Kurt Waldheim's Diaries for Richard as Raymond Chandler, Griff as Milton, Paul as Sunday Sport, and John as Frederick Nietschke.
Film and Theater Styles- Richard is a businessman buying Paul's sandwich shop in the styles spaghetti western, Monty Python and horror. Then John shows Griff how to operate the nuclear button in the styles Laurel and Hardy, Arthur Miller, Whodunnit and Swedish erotica.
Worlds Worst- Richard, Griff, Paul and John perform the worst person to be President of the United States.
Props- John and Griff v Paul and Richard.
Remote Control- The subject is traffic for Richard as an American game show, Griff as One Man and his Dog, Paul as a cop show, and John as Noggin the Nog.
Party Quirks- Paul hosts with Richard from Mission Impossible, Griff as a bad ventriloquist, and John's from the future.
Credits Reading- John and Griff as Griff.

Game Won By- John and Griff

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Solid intro, his comments about Griff and Paul are the best bits.

Authors- Griff found the title very funny. He also showed how this game should be played, doing both an accurate and funny impression of his author. Paul is funny here too. I enjoyed this playing.
Memorable Quote- Paul on Kurth Waldheim: “Kurt Waldheim, is he really Elvis Pressley?”

Film and Theatre Styles: Richard and Paul- Someone made a funny suggestion that Clive shortened to the 1920’s. A solid playing, the rendition of horror at the end was the best part.

Film and Theatre Styles: John and Griff- Good playing, these two work so well together. Swedish erotica at the end is clearly the best bit, although I enjoyed their Laurel and Hardy as well.
Memorable Quote- Griff to Clive after he presses the buzzer: “Don’t you press the button.”. Fits the scene perfectly.

World’s Worst- Lots of stating the obvious here, e.g. Griff as George Bush. Anyway, there were one or two good one’s, but besides that it’s just the usual World’s Worst round. Watch John do a better Griff than Griff can do as the last suggestion.

Props- A slightly above average playing, Griff and John have some good ideas and one or two good one’s game from Paul and Richard. One of the better playing in this series.

Remote Control- This was obviously going to be very good, and it was as good as you would expect. I thought all four were very good, but I especially enjoyed Griff and Richard. Just try not to crack up at Griff doing a dog being ran over.

Party Quirks- Paul is as usual a good host. Richard and John’s quirks are not very well done. Griff’s one is classic, he does it very well. Solid enough, although nothing special.

Credits Reading- One of the best Credits Reading

Best Game- Remote Control
Worst Game- World’s Worst

Performer Ratings
1- Griff
2- Paul
3- John
4- Richard

Misc Notes- Griff is another highly underrated performer on this show, he’s brilliant in all of his appearances, and works very well with John. Paul just doesn’t seem to be the performer he was even as soon as a year later, he improves very quickly in the next series to become arguably the best performer during the next three seasons.

Overall- One of the better episodes of the series, all thanks to Griff who does a very good job here. A few memorable games, and most of the rest are solid enough. Thumbs slightly up.

Series 1, Episode 9

Cast- Clive Anderson, Mike McShane (first appearance), Josie Lawrence, Tony Slattery and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's Night of the Crumpet with Mike as Louis L'Amour, Josie as the Brothers Grimm, Tony as Dr Alex Comfort, and John as William Faulkner.
Film and Theatre Styles- Josie tries to murder her husband Mike in the styles Russ Mayer, Film Noir, Star Wars and Gilbert and Sullivan. Then party host Tony borrows coffee from neighbour John in the styles stock exchange information documentary, escape movie and restoration comedy.
Worlds Worst- Mike, Josie, Tony and John perform the worst person to get an Oscar.
Remote Control- The subject is hedgehogs for Mike as Miami Vice, Josie from Treasure Hunt, Tony's Game For A Laugh and John is Floyd on Fish.
Musical- Mike, Josie, Tony and John sing of playing football, being stopped by the police and waking up.
Credits Reading- Mike as Jimmy Stewart.

Game Won By- Mike

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Not bad, although it wasn’t one of his memorable introductions.

Authors- Tony makes an unsurprising choice of Dr Alex Comfort, the man who wrote the Joy Of Sex. This wouldn’t be the only time Tony would use this author either. A great playing, made especially funny when Clive buzzes Tony out early before he can go into detail on his author. Very funny stuff.
Memorable Quote- Tony: “The elf was little but of course size doesn’t matter.”

Film and Theatre Styles: Josie and Mike- Mike and Josie are a great team, and this was a strong game as a result. I especially enjoyed Film Noir and Gilbert and Sullivan. Mike is strong here

Film and Theatre Styles: Tony and John- Another funny playing, Tony and John are a good team as well, and Tony’s little messup at the end is the funniest part. Solid.

World’s Worst- I thought Mike’s idea about clubbing himself to death with the award and Josie’s silly suggestion about the way the award looks are really funny. I like a few of Tony’s ideas as well. John looks left out in this game.

Remote Control- This game never seems to dissapoint, and this was no exception. I enjoyed John and Tony’s shows the best. A funny playing, if a little silly.

Musical- Josie and Mike are always strong in the singing round, they helped make this round a really good one. Tony also gives a very good cotnribution to this round. A memorable game.
Memorable Quote- Tony: “I was walking down the street, on my way to luncheon, when I was stopped by a policeman, who abused me with his truncheon”

Credits Reading- Mike does a funny impression here, although I prefer Jim Meskimen’s impression of Jimmy Stewart of Mike’s since I thought it was incredibly good.

Best Game- Musical
Worst Game- World’s Worst

Performer Ratings
1- Mike
2- Tony
3- Josie
4- John

Overall- A very strong episode, lots of great games and nothing that should be skipped. Thumbs up.

Series 1, Episode 10

Cast- Clive Anderson, Stephen Fry, Josie Lawrence, Enn Reitel (only appearance) and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's the day I became a merchant banker with Stephen as 1001 Arabian nights, Josie as Mary Shelley, Enn as Dashell Hammett and John as Frank Richards.
Story- Stephen tells the story of Tarzan and the Lager Louts with the moral you can't put all your eggs in one basket with John as Tarzan, Josie as Jane and Enn as a lager lout.
Worlds Worst- Stephen, Josie, Enn and John perform the worst thing to say to the Royal Family
Props- It's John and Stephen v Josie and Enn.
Couples- The John tells Enn's fortune in the styles Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier, Alec Guinness and Vincent Price, Sean Connery and Dame Edna, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, and Reagan and Gorbachev..
Wrong Theme Tune- Stephen and Josie perform a documentary on contraception.
Rap- John, Enn, Josie and Stephen sing of sheep.
Credits Reading- Stephen as an American announcer.

Game Won By- Stephen

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Another solid intro, his line about John at the end is a good one.
Memorable Quote- Clive on John “And finally we have John Sessions who as far as this show’s concerned is completely irreplacable, and goodness know we’ve tried”

Authors- A solid, if unspectacular playing, with Stephen and John doing a good job.

Story- I wonder why Clive always goes to someone in the front row? Anyway, Stephen makes a great storyteller, and John does a good job as a cissy version of Tarzan. Enn is funny as the lager lout as well. Stephen’s witty change of the moral at the end is a stroke of genius. Overall a very good game.

Props- Not an especially good playing, barring one very funny suggestion by Stephen and John at the end, for the wrong reasons.

Couples- Well, good in places, mainly Barney and Fred, but the rest weren’t really especially memorable.

World’s Worst- A good playing. Stephen’s first suggestion is very funny for the wrong reasons, even Clive has to keep himself from laughing. Stephen generally is the reason this game was so good.

Wrong Theme Tune- Very silly stuff, which you would expect since they were doing a documentary of contraception in kids TV style.

Rap- Just excellent stuff. Enn’s rap is very funny, and Stephen goes into a monologue again to great effect. Best game of the show.

Credits Reading- A funny enough Credits Reading, but not especially memorable.

Best Game- Rap
Worst Game- Props

Performer Ratings
1- Stephen
2- Josie
3- Enn
4- John

Overall- You know that any episode with Stephen Fry on it is going to be good, and this was no exception. The weakest of the three Stephen apppearances, but still good stuff. Thumbs slightly up.

Series 1, Episode 11 (compilation 1)

Cast- Clive Anderson, John Sessions, Josie Lawrence, Paul Merton, Tony Slattery, Archie Hann, Stephen Fry, Jonathan Pryce and Mike McShane

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Film and Theatre Styles- Josie returns a faulty purchase to Paul in the styles German expressionism, Hammer horror, Whitehall farce and Disney. Then jealous husband Archie comes home to find the wife's lover John in the styles Rambo movie, Greek tragedy and kung fu.
Every Other Line- Jonathan reads from Robin Hood, The Truth Behind The Tights as Paul tries to get his TV fixed.
Song Styles- Josie sings a gospel about a toothbrush.
Props- John and Mike v Tony and Josie.
Film Dub- Stephen and Josie discuss how to decorate the room.
Party Quirks- Tony hosts with Josie hearing voices, Mike as a kissogram and John is a cub scout leader.
Song Styles- Josie is strong in the Gospel style, she does the song very well. Then again, I never consider there to be a bad Josie song, and this one was good and to the point. Maybe this is what helped to come up with the idea for the Gospel round in the next season.

Props- One of the better Series 1 playing of Props, Tony and Mike help liven things up and have some great ideas.

Film Dub- Excellent Film Dub, Stephen adds a lot to this round. One of my favourite Film Dub’s, the best of this series by far.

Party Quirks- Tony does a solid job as host, although not as funny as he became in the future. Mike’s quirk is done fantastically, it couldn’t have been done better. Josie and John’s quirks are alright as well

Opera- The audience member Clive talks to is a complete idiot, and the results with his conversation with Clive are excellent. The Opera itself is OK, but there are far better one’s in the future (the Rock Opera at the end of Series 2 for example).

Best Game- Film
Worst Game- None are especially weak in this case

Performer Ratings
1- Mike
2- Josie
3- Stephen
4- Paul
5- Tony
6- John
7- Archie
8- Jonathan

Misc Notes- The first show with no playing of Authors. I also believe this was Tony’s first time hosting the party in Party Quirks, he shows all the signs of the host he became in future years.

Overall- A great clip show, lots of good games here and nothing I’d say was especially bad. It makes me wonder why a lot of this stuff was cut when most of it was better than what was shown. Thumbs up.

Series 1, Episode 12 (compilation)

Cast- Clive Anderson, John Sessions, Josie Lawrence, Tony Slattery, Stephen Fry, Jonathan Pryce, Mike McShane and Rory McGrath

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Film and Theatre Styles- Josie is John's museum guide in the styles Bill Forsythe movie, Dirty Harry, Doctor in the House and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Story- Rory tells the story I Was A Russian Fighter Pilot with the moral don't do it on the first date with John as John Jonavitch Jonavitch Denisenog, Tony as Toni and Jonathan as Mikhail Gorbachev.
Rap- John, Tony, Josie and Mike sing about handbags.
Song Styles- Josie sings about a television set in Eurovision Song Contest style.
Party Quirks- Tony hosts with Rory as a compulsive liar, Jonathan as an undertaker looking for business and John as a character from Thunderbirds.
Every Other Line- Josie reads from The Happiest Days of Your Life as Stephen tries to book a holiday in a hurry.
Musical- Josie, Mike, Tony and John sing about gliding, getting lost in a maze and going to a party.

Game Won By- Nobody since it’s a compilation

Game Thoughts
Film and Theatre Styles- There’s some very funny interactions between Clive and some people with suggestions in the crowd. As far as the game went, John was fairly acurate with the different styles, but I didn’t find very much to laugh at. Not a good playing for the most part.

Story- Clive has some funny banter with a few people in the crowd when getting suggestions, paticaularly Joe, the man in the t-shirt. Rory is a strong storyteller, so this game was quite good. There’s never usually a bad playing of this anyway. So it’s was very funny overall.

Rap- This is a game where John was unable to keep up with the other three performers. Tony rap is rude and very funny at the same time. Mike’s rap is a strong one. An excellent round overall outisde of John’s rap.
Memorable Quote- The second part of Tony’s rap: “I was walking with my bag the other day, my friend saw me with and he said hey, he said hey hey he-hey hey hey hey hey, he’s really repetitive so I shot him”

Song Styles- Josie has another good song here, there’s never a bad one but I’d say this is slightly weaker than a few of her other songs. It ended quite quickly as well.

Party Quirks- Tony is a good host as always. Rory’s quirk isn’t especially well done. Jonathan’s quirk is better but not a lot funnier. John surprisingly is the one to liven up this game with his Thunderbirds quirk, one of his best moments on the show. Not a memorable playing, although the quirks had potential.

Every Other Line- Clive seems to be displeased with the suggestion of “it’s not as small as it looks”, and there’s some funny banter between Stephen and Clive over this as well. A very funny playing since Stephen excels in this sort of game, he ties everything Josie says to the scene very well. Great game.

Musical- Some good suggestions for a Musical for once. Mike is sensational in this singing game, he and Josie are such a good team when it comes to these sort of games, and Tony’s sillyness adds a lot here as well. Only John seems to struggle to keep up. Another very funny game.

Best Game- Either Musical or Rap
Worst Game- Film and Theatre Styles

Performer Ratings
1- Mike
2- Tony
3- Josie
4- Stephen
5- Rory
6- John
7- Jonathan

Overall- Another very good clip show, which makes me wonder why half this stuff was cut out when it could have replaced some of the weaker rounds that weren’t cut. Thumbs up.

Series 1, Episode 13 (pilot)

Cast- Clive Anderson, Jon Glover (only appearance), Jimmy Mulville, Josie Lawrence and John Sessions

Games (Taken from Whose Line Wiki)
Authors- It's a visit to the dentist with Jon as Daniel Defoe, Jimmy as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Josie as Jackie Collins and John as TS Eliot.
Film and Theatre Styles- Jimmy and Josie are chatting each other up in the styles western, Harold Pinter, horror and Disney. Then estate agent John shows Jon around a property in the styles Restoration comedy, fire brigade training film, Star Trek, and Carry On film.
Film Dub- Jon and Jimmy are in tin suits.
Song Styles- The subject is a washing machine for Josie doing country and western and John doing music hall.
Props- Josie and Jimmy v Jon and John.
Opera- The opera is about brushing teeth, missing the train and having a barbecue for Josie, John, Jon and Jimmy.

Game Won By- Jon

Game Thoughts
Introduction- Clive looks really nervous, nothing like the cool, composed host he was when the show was picked up. I like the little line before the show starts that Clive says about himself. Clive’s intro is more serious than the light hearted intro’s he used in later versions.
Memorable Quote- Before the show starts, Clive on ‘himself’: “You will notice I hope that I’m not introducing the show, instead it’s introduced by my identical twin brother who’s looking very, very uncomfortable.”

Authors- A bit of funny banter between the contestents and Clive before the game starts. Anyway, this wasn’t bad, but there have been far better playings of the game, and the game didn’t get a lot of laughs.

Film and Theatre Styles: Jimmy and Josie- Not a very good playing. Josie’s western was the only highlight in what was a dull round.
Memorable Quote: During Disney style: Josie:”Why don’t we sing our favourite song?” Jimmy:”Okay” Josie:”You start”

Film and Theatre Styles: John and Jon- A better playing than Jimmy and Josie’s mainly thanks to John, but still this wasn’t especially good either.

Film Dub- I enjoyed this Film Dub, even though it wasn’t the funniest in the world. One of the better games on the show.

Song Styles: Josie- A great song, maybe if it hadn’t been for stuff like this then the show would never have been picked up in the first place. A sign of things to come.

Song Styles: John- Not bad, but it ended a bit too promptly for my liking. Still, John was accurate in his use of the style.

Props- A dull playing, hardly anything got a laugh from the audience.

Opera- Not bad, but not a memorable Opera either like some of the later playings.

Best Game- Song Styles
Worst Game- Props

Performer Ratings
1- John
2- Josie
3- Jon
4- Jimmy

Misc Notes- For obvious reasons the set looks different. The performance area is blue rather than black. Clive’s desk is a different shape, and he has a bell instead of a buzzer.

Overall- It’s a pilot episode, so there’s nothing much to expect from it. One or two good moments showed enough potential to get the show picked up, but the show itself is one to forget. Thumbs down.

Overall Series Thoughts- A lot of people tend to say to skip this year since there isn’t anything that should be watched. However I’d disagree with that as there’s a lot to like here. Several very funny episodes and memorable moments make this a series to watch. Just because Ryan, Colin and Greg aren’t involved doesn’t mean it isn’t funny. Thumbs up to this series.

Must See Episodes- 3, 9, 11, 12
Episodes To Watch Once- 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10
Episodes To Miss- 5, 6, 13

Performer Rankings
1- Tony
2- Josie
3- Paul
4- Stephen
5- Mike
6- John
7- Peter
8- Griff
9- Rory McGrath
10- Rory Bremner
11- Graeme
12- Enn
13- George
14- Jimmy
15- Archie
16- Jonathan
17- Richard
18- Jan
19- Jon
20- Betty

More will be finished and added in a few hours when I finish college. I'll maybe add some more thoughts on the first series as well.
